Is twitter the start of the future web 3.0?

by arnteriksen on May 1, 2009

I just read an article at Working Three which asked the question “Is Twitter the Start of Web 3.0?”

Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, have some thoughts on what Web 3.0 should be – and simply put, he think it’s going to be sharing data. Now – many would ask themselves, aren’t we doing that already? Well – yes, and no.
We are sharing information, but we are not putting the data available to others to obtain and use, and this is what Tim believes will be Web 3.0

You can see the TED Conference video here

Now – what about twitter in all of this? Isn’t twitter just a part of the whole web 2.0 thing? In a way yes, but also no.

Twitter is, in my view, the bridge between web 2.0 and web 3.0. Sure on the surface Twitter looks like a way to connect with people and for Ashton Kutcher to stroke his own ego in 140 characters or less but it is much, much more. The real difference between Twitter and say Facebook is that, on Twitter, you are not connecting with that old school friend who you quickly realise you have little in common with and will never message again, but you are connecting with people who share a common interest. You are connecting to ideas.

Now this is the interesting thought. Twitter is then, by the definition of what web 2.0 is and what Web 3.0 is supposed to be – somewhere in between. Twitter is in reality web 2.5.

And I agree. Twitter is not just a conversation between people, it’s sharing common ideas, interests and inspirations – in a live stream with people that share these same things.

The question that arises in my mind is; what meaning and impact will web 3.0 have on all of us? Will twitter as a platform/tool be developed into something more, or will it stay in the web 2.5 state? What will replace twitter at some point, that will change once more the way we humans communicate across geographical borders.

I love the idea of data-sharing, where everything is available to everyone, to use the data for everything useful to useless if that’s your game. I’m sure the people working on this next big thing, have some of the answers already, but when the era of web 3.0 strikes is not certain at all. I think the common man has to get a grip of the web 2.0/2.5 era first and the #Oprah and #Ashton Kutcher effect has pushed the process in the fast lane and made it more mainstream.

What are your thoughts?
